Celebrating Our Veterans
We are grateful to our veterans for so many reasons, and should thank them for their tireless service every day. On Sunday, November 11th (observed Monday, November 12th) we will come together as a country to thank the brave people who have served our country in times of great turmoil and times of peace. The annual NYC Veterans Day Parade will begin at 11:15am on Sunday heading north on Fifth Avenue from 26th Street to 46th Street. An anticipated 25,000 participants will include veterans of all eras, military units, civis and youth groups, businesses, and marching bands in addition to floats, vintage vehicles and more. This year's parade celebrate and commemorates the centennial of the end of WWI, where 4.8 millions Americans served, more than half of whom had been drafted. This year's parade is expected to draw incredible crowds, ready to applaud those who have served.
Treatment of veterans in this country has an acknowledged checkered past. While we hope for continual improvements, if you’d like to take a more active role in thanking our veterans for their service and supporting them, here are some fantastic resources and organizations that could use your help.
Operation Supply Drop provides active duty military with bits of home via care packages that build community. OSD also has numerous veteran-focused programs focusing on reintegration, mental health, and transitioning back to civilian life.
The Wounded Warrior Project focuses on the mental health, providing incredible around-the clock care, counseling, and community to those in need. By donating this Veteran’s Day, you can make your money count for more. The Blue Angels Foundation has very generously offered to match donations made up to one million dollars.
X Sports for Vets’ mission is to “take the edge out of civilian life.” They build and maintain local groups of vets and coordinate adrenaline-fueled outings such as skydiving, rock climbing, and more.
Heal Our Heroes does an incredible job of supporting veterans during the transition back to civilian life with a variety of programs. They focus on mental health, but also provide essential resources and support services to meet their day-to-day needs.
